Iced Tea is a Way to be Cool this Summer

Jun 25, 2015|

How you define ‘cool’ most likely depends on your age. Maybe Arthur Fonzarelli of Happy Days was the epitome of cool for you. Perhaps clicking a digital image of a ‘thumbs up’ is the standard. Either way, the word cool in this context usually translates into something that is socially acceptable or popular.

In the beverage landscape, iced tea is becoming the ‘cool kid’ of the group both socially and chemically in that it is cool and refreshing during the heat of summer. Obviously tea, especially the iced version, is refreshing and thirst quenching but it’s also gaining momentum socially.

“Tea is rock and roll, it’s healthy, it’s getting a lot of good movement from the backlash against carbonated soft drinks, a lot of people are drinking it and there is a lot of competition,” said Tom Pirko the President of Bevmark Consulting in Buellton, California.

Consumer trends back up Pirko’s claims as well. According to research done by The Association for Convenience & Fuel Retailing (NACS), tea has seen a 32% increase in domestic sales in both restaurants and grocery stores since 2007. Expanding on that growth initiative, the World Tea Expo is predicting a 50% uptick in tea sales globally by the end of next year.

When it comes to the iced version of the beverage, the United States has the largest consumer base. Approximately 85% of tea consumed in America is of the iced version according to the Tea Association of the USA.

Not only is iced tea refreshing and thirst-quenching, it is also light and doesn’t fill you up. This is one of the reasons why it has become so popular around meal times. According to NPD, one of the nation’s leading research firms, 88% of consumption comes during the lunch (45%) and dinner (33%) dayparts and not surprising, Dataessential lists it as the third-most menued beverage in restaurants (behind only soda and diet soda).

As the summer months heat up, be ‘cool’. Simply grab a glass of iced tea and enjoy!
