BUNN saves energy through responsible product design
Converting product displays to energy-saving LED lights is just one way that BUNN is showing its commitment to saving energy through responsible product design. The company is expanding the use of LED lights in BUNN products with the conversion of the JDF Silver Series and other product lines.
LED lights have a longer life than fluorescent or incandescent bulbs and use considerably less energy. For example, by converting fluorescent lights to LED lights in the BUNN Gourmet Juice (JDF-2S and JDF-4S), 76 and 55 kilowatt hours (KWh) can be saved annually. That means these machines use from 39 to 54% less energy for lighting. Lights in the Powdered Autofill version of the BUNN Ultra Gourmet Ice have been converted from incandescent to LED, saving 63 kWh annually and using 60% less energy.
In addition, BUNN practices these energy-saving and environmentally sustainable practices: Energy Saver Mode – AXIOM®, My Café®, AutoPOD®, ITCB and many other new products have an energy saver mode feature that reduces power consumption by lowering or turning off the tank heater during periods of inactivity. Vacuum Servers vs. Traditional Warmers – BUNN features a full line of vacuum-insulated servers and brewers that brew directly into these servers. Our 1.0 and 1.5 gallon ThermoFresh® servers, airpots, thermal servers, and thermal carafes do not require electricity to keep coffee hot for hours. BUNN ThermoFresh Brewers, Infusion Series® Coffee Brewers, and AXIOM Brewers brew directly into insulated servers, saving energy. Traditional decanter and 1.5 gallon satellite brewers use electric warmer plates and consume electricity to keep coffee hot. Foam Insulation - Foam insulation free of HFC's (hydrofluorocarbons) is now used exclusively to insulate Soft Heat® servers and the cabinets of liquid coffee and cold beverage dispensers. Packaging – BUNN continues to replace Styrofoam packing with biodegradable materials when appropriate since the company wants to assure adequate packaging so that the product will not be damaged in transit. Electronics - Lead-free solder is used in the production of all electronic control boards. Recycled materials - Although post-consumer materials are not used in the manufacture of BUNN equipment because of its food-oriented nature, scrap materials such as plastics are recycled. For example, up to 15% of the composition of a plastic part will contain scrap left over from previous production runs. In addition, laser cutters and other sophisticated manufacturing equipment are used to assure optimization of all stainless steel, minimizing scrap. BUNN stainless steel contains recycled metal content, lessening its environmental impact.

HV is newest addition to BUNN super-automatic espresso systems
BUNN Espress® HV adds operational ease and broadens the espresso drink spectrum of the BUNN line of super-automatic espresso systems. Whether you are serving customers cappuccino, lattes or espresso, the HV makes it easy to create wonderful, top-quality specialty beverages. The system creates espresso beverages and milk foam simultaneously; the milk is foamed separately with the automatic steam wand. The unit also includes a hot water dispenser for tea and other beverages.
Creamy and firm milk foam can be produced with incredible consistency using the “Intellisteam” steam wand technology. The HV can make 240 espressos, 200 coffees, or 240 tea beverages per hour and boasts an endless steam supply.
The HV is constructed of three modules, each of which can be changed in an instant. Since espresso systems are often difficult to maintain, the HV is quick and cost-effective to service by comparison. The brewing module includes 2 grinders and a stainless steel brewing unit for assured superior flavor and superb texture and body. The steam module contains a high-capacity, 4-litre boiler for continuous unlimited steam and hot water supply. The hydraulic module provides temperature controlled hot water for perfect espresso preparation.
The sophisticated operation includes a large, colorful touch-screen that can be customized to include all the espresso beverage options available. The clean cycle is automatic – just add a cleaning tablet and follow the prompts on the touch screen. All work steps, such as replenishing the coffee beans, emptying the grounds drawer or starting the automatic cleaning process are easy.
Versatile enough to suit all tastes, the HV is only 24 inches (600 mm) wide, fitting on most countertops, making it the right choice for traditional milk preparation with steam. The HV has a heavy-duty aluminum grinder with ceramic burrs, steam pipe made of Peek™, manual and automatic steam output, and a stylish chrome plated front panel.
The unit’s double hopper holds up to 1.5 lbs. of fresh beans, so that two separate roasts of espresso beans can be used. After the beans are ground, an intelligent modular brewing chamber adjusts espresso flavor, simulating the motion of a barista tamping and polishing the grind, so that espresso is extracted uniformly for optimum flavor.
Beverages in cups ranging from 4.5 to 7.4 inches tall can be created using the simple control panel.
The HV is available as a two-step S model, featuring a steam wand with a temperature sensor to prevent overheating of milk.
All BUNN Espress® HV models are supported by a full two-year parts and one-year labor warranty. The BUNNserve® nationwide network backs the HV with unequaled support and service.

Now you can have your coffee brewing questions answered by an expert: BUNN’s Dr. Brew. On the new blog, "Dear Dr. Brew" at www.deardrbrew.com, the sage coffee brewing expert and his capable crew field a variety of questions about brewing excellent coffee. With over 28 years of experience in working with coffee brewing technology, Dr. Brew excels at teaching people how to understand the chemistry of coffee brewing and how to brew coffee in easy-to-understand language. The Crew consists of a knowledgeable group of people at BUNN who work closely with Dr. Brew on a daily basis.
Based in Springfield, Illinois, USA, the Bunn-O-Matic® Corporation (BUNN) has a long history of innovation expertise in coffee brewing. Founded in 1957 by George Bunn, who pioneered the flat-bottom commercial paper coffee filter, and, later, the pourover coffee brewer, the family business has been credited with introducing many other innovations and key technologies to the beverage equipment industry.
The LCR-3 HV, BUNN’s new high-volume liquid coffee dispenser, brings a new level of ease and convenience to serving large amounts of coffee with easy cost-effective operations, electronic controls, and many other unique features. Its stainless steel outer cabinet allows the unit to easily fit into a commercial kitchen environment.
Minimal operator training is required since the LCR-3 HV can dispense up to three separate types of coffee. The unit can also be set up to yield three separate portions at the push of a button, allowing staff to fill carafes, cambros, or other large servers (up to five gallons or 18.9 litres at a time) effortlessly. In addition, the dispenser’s display alerts the operator when concentrate is low or cleaning is needed.
Labor costs are reduced through the optional "auto-switching" mode. This mode allows the operator to choose two pumps to dispense one flavor. When one bag-in-box (BIB) is detected empty, the system automatically switches to a secondary BIB. This eliminates the need to change a BIB during peak demands. There are no filters or grounds to handle, so labor costs are further reduced. In addition, storage costs are reduced since coffee extract requires less storage space than roast ground coffee.
Since only the coffee required is dispensed, the LCR-3 HV eliminates waste, stale or burnt coffee. Product life is extended and degradation reduced through the unit’s refrigerated product storage cabinet. Its modular refrigeration element is easy to service and keeps concentrate at a temperature of 41o to 65 oF (5° to 18.3°C), although the environment outside the dispenser might reach 95°F (35°C).
Multi-volt design is easily converted to ratings from 120/208 and 120/240 volts (50-60 Hertz) single phase up to a 120/208 three phase.

BUNN Successfully Completes ISO 9001:2000 Triennial Assessment
SPRINGFIELD, IL The Bunn-O-Matic Corporation, a manufacturer of commercial and home beverage equipment, has announced that its facilities in Creston, Iowa; Springfield, Illinois and White Hall, Illinois facilities have successfully passed ISO 9001:2000 Triennial Assessment. All ISO registered companies must pass this complete audit of all aspects of Quality Management System once every three years in order to continue their registration.
The ISO 9000 series standards are internationally recognized quality management system requirements developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standards emphasize on quality commitment and planning by top management and all employees. This “system input, system output” approach is measured and evidence of system performance must be demonstrated.
BUNN began the registration process in 1998. The White Hall, Illinois facility was added to the registration in 2003. As part of the process, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) performed an on-site assessment, examination of documented procedures and a survey of the company’s overall operations. To determine continued compliance with ISO 9001:2000, UL will periodically conduct routine surveillance audits of BUNN’s operations.
The successful completion of the Triennial Assessment was made possible by the ongoing and sustained efforts of BUNN employees to continually improve the Quality Management System. At the core of these improvement efforts is the belief that we must understand the customer's, both internal and external, requirements and complete the job right the first time. A key component of the ISO registration is an ongoing program of internal audits conducted by Bunn-O-Matic internal auditors to both educate affected parties to the standards, and, to assure compliance with ISO 9001:2000.
