Dr. Brew - Hot Coffee Enjoyment is Simple

Dec 1, 2015|

We’ve all read about all the trends touting newest and trendiest version of coffee, usually in cold and/or iced form but even as coffee evolves into many different forms, there is still nothing like a hot cup of coffee especially as the temperature continues to drop with the onset of fall. Brewing a delicious hot cup of coffee is easy to do if you remember these easy tips.

  1. Keep the Beans Fresh. fresh beans bring out the best flavor. Make sure you store your unused beans in an airtight storage container to save the freshness for future use.
  1. Grind Your Own Beans. The best-tasting brews are made from beans ground just before brewing. Grinding prior to brewing will maximize the flavor of your beans.
  1. Watch the Water. 98-99% of coffee is water so using the correct type of water is crucial.  Using Softened or distilled water is not ideal as minerals are essential to extracting the desired flavor from the beans.
  1. Focus on the Filter. If almost all of coffee is water, you want to make sure you’re running that water through a quality filter. Look for paper filters that won’t add color or flavor to your coffee.
  1. Make the Proper Measurement. The standard measure for brewing coffee of proper strength is a ratio of approximately 18/1 (coffee/water). This ratio works for both grams to milliliters and ounces to ounces. Keep in mind this works for milliliters to grams or ounces to ounces. Some may think tricks like using hotter water and fewer beans will help, but in reality the coffee usually ends up tasting bitter.
  1. Bring the Heat. Water that is too hot can extract compounds in the coffee that are bitter rather than pleasant. The proper brewing temperature is 200°F (93.3°C) of water in contact with the grounds. One of the advantages of BUNN brewers is they are set to brew at this exact temperature.
  1. Routine Cleaning. Clean your carafe and grinder every few weeks to remove any oily buildup.

Delicious tasting coffee can become a part of any daily routine if you continue to keep these helpful tips in mind. If you have any questions for Dr. Brew regarding your brewing methods, please feel free to reach out here.
